// Have been developing an interest in moving imagery recently, and have been investigating high-speed video in particular. Came across this gallery from the manufacturers Photron: http://www.photron.com/?cmd=gallery
// Some of the videos are truly incredible - have watched each video at least three times!

ALL SQUARE \\ images

\\ I recently went out on a photo safari with the OU camera club, where our sole aim was to create images in the square format, either by capturing using a camera with a native square format, or by post-processing. I opted for my digital compact for portability, with processing in Elements and PicMonkey.

\\ First up is a triptych of found graffiti on the walls of the nearby underpasses (above). Some people find graffiti offensive, but I think it makes for an interesting addition to otherwise bland concrete facings. All three of these images were originally in colour, but I felt they worked well in B&W with extra noise and grain added for a gritty effect.

\\ The next three images were taken later on the walk. The cow was captured over a gateway where it was taking shelter from the sporadic rain showers. A simple conversion to B&W with a gentle vignette added to draw attention to the cows stare. The two images of trees/river were captured using an IR filter over the camera lens, with a slow shutter speed due to only capturing IR wavelength light. For "IR trees" I used an ISO of 1600 and added a fair amount of grain and boosted the highlights, aided by the beam of sunlight reflecting off the leaves at the moment of capture. "IR trees & river" is a more straightforward image in terms of processing, and shutter speed was a lot slower too because I used a lower ISO (400) to reduce noise/grain.

\\ Not content with trying to do two jobs at once, take photos, maintain two websites and finding some time for playing sport, I have set up an alternative blog that is specifically for black & white film images. You can find it here! I am continuing to populate this webpage too, but wanted to differentiate between two avenues.

// Have finally got around to uploading these shots from a session in Edinburgh. Walking past a brand new waterfront development in one of Edinburghs up-and-coming areas I was struck by the clash of old versus new. Installation of well designed benches (top left) that are in-keeping with the areas dockyard history have been positioned with pleasant views over the forth. Whilst elsewhere along the waterfront indications of the areas history have been preserved (top right). However, once you look past the barriers of the builders fences to the derelict land adjacent to the development, a different story is apparent (bottom left, right). The old barrel has clearly been left there for many years; while evidence of more recent abandonment is also present - a shopping trolley from a relatively new nearby supermarket. Perhaps the trolley will remain in this position for as long as

Heading out on a "square only" adventure next week - challenge is to explore the square format fully. Currently undecided whether to take out the native square format Lubitel 166B and get the films processed/scanned, or just to take a digital compact to keep things light and process in photoshop?? Either way, will post what comes out in a new gallery.
